BIOMEDICAL EQUIPMENT TECHNOLOGY (2
yr AAS) St. Philip’s College
Repair,
calibrate and maintain medical equipment and instrumentation used in healthcare
delivery fields. Inspect and install medical related technical equipment in medical
and research facilities for use by physicians, nurses, scientists, or engineers
involved in researching, monitoring, diagnosing and treating physical ailments
or dysfunctions. May work as
salesperson or service technician for equipment manufacturers or their sales
representatives.
DENTAL HYGIENIST (2
yr Certificate) UT Health Science
Center (*Prerequisites required)
Clean
deposits, and stains from teeth and beneath the gums, using dental
instruments. Examine gums for sores and
signs of disease, and apply fluorides and other preventive agents to arrest
dental decay. Chart conditions of decay
and disease for diagnosis and treatment by dentist, expose and develop x-ray
film, and make impressions for study casts.
Provide clinical services and health education to improve oral health of
school children.
SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY
(1 yr Certificate) St. Philip’s
College (*Prerequisites required)
Perform any combination of the
following tasks either before, during, or after an operation: Prepare patient by
washing, shaving, etc.; place equipment and supplies in an operating room
according to the surgeon's instruction; arrange instruments under direction of
nurse; maintain specified supply of fluids for use during operation; adjust
lights and equipment as directed; hand instruments and supplies to surgeon,
hold retractors, and cut sutures as directed; count sponges, needles, and
instruments used during operation; and clean operating room.
LICENSED VOCATIONAL NURSE (1
yr Certificate) St. Philip’s College
Take vital signs of patients, treat bedsores,
prepare and give injections, apply dressings, insert catheters, and give
cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Aid
patients with hygiene, comfort, and help care for emotional needs. Provides clinical patient care within
scope of LVN license. Administers medications as necessary. May work as part of
the patient care team in conjunction with physicians, RNs, aides and other
staff.
REGISTERED NURSE (2
yr AAS)
Care for the sick and help people stay well. Coordinates and provides direct patient care. May oversee clinical care of other personnel, including LVNs and Aides. Works with physicians to ensure good patient outcomes. Provides education to patients/ family members that will improve their care once released from the health care setting.
MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (2
yr AAS) St. Philip’s College
Perform
routine tests in medical laboratories for use in treatment and diagnosis of
disease. Prepare vaccines, biologicals
and serums for prevention of disease.
Prepare tissue samples for Pathologists, take blood samples and execute
such laboratory tests as urinalysis and blood counts, may work under the
general supervision of a Medical Laboratory Technologist.
MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTIONIST (1 yr Certificate) St. Philip’s College (*Prerequisites required)
Use shorthand to take dictation of correspondence, reports, and other material. Records examination, or other medical proceedings by machine shorthand or reports proceedings into steno-mask. Operates word processor to transcribe recorded material or dictates material into recording machine.
RADIOGRAPHY TECHNOLOGIST (2 yr AAS) St. Philip’s College
Take X-rays and CAT scans
or administer non-radioactive materials into patient’s blood stream for
diagnostic purposes. Performs general radiology procedures. Interacts with
patient and educates him/her on procedure to help reduce patient fear and
anxiety.
